The Best Outdoor Dog Breeds for Your Outdoor Adventures

October 15, 2020

Fall is arguably the best season for outdoor activities. The crisp air and vibrant autumn leaves are practically begging you to come outside — and how can you resist? The temperatures are cool yet comfortable, providing the perfect weather for a hike, boat ride, or long drive with the windows down.

The only thing that could make it better? A dog in the passenger seat, its tail wagging in uncontrollable excitement.

Not only are dogs living examples of happiness in its purest form, but they also make you healthier just by owning one. Dog owners are known to be less stressed and more active than those without a four-legged friend, especially during the winter.

The best part? Dogs love being outside. If you consider yourself the “outdoorsy” type and are looking for a furry sidekick, there are numerous breeds that would make a great fit. Whether you love being in the mountains, in a tent, or on a boat, there’s a dog that would love to be there with you.

Here are some of the best outdoor dog breeds to join you in the great outdoors:

Australian Shepherd

If you’re looking for a dog to keep up with your active lifestyle, the Australian Shepherd (Aussie) is a perfect fit! Known for their agility and intelligence, this breed makes the perfect outdoor companion.

Because of their high-endurance level, they’re well-suited for activities like hiking and camping. Aussies are considered working dogs, which means they’re happier with a “job.” They’re often used on ranches and farms for their exceptional herding skills. Keeping them as active as possible is essential for their well-being.

Australian Shepherds are loyal, friendly, and highly intelligent, making them easy to train. They excel at various dog sports like frisbee and obedience competitions.

Labrador Retriever

Deemed the most popular dog breed for the 29th year in a row, the Labrador Retriever is one of the best dogs for outdoors. As their name suggests, Labs have the ability to retrieve pretty much anything. Hunters and fishers love bringing them along to retrieve nets, fish, ducks, and more.

As a bonus, Labs are instinctively drawn to the water. Their webbed toes and water-proof coat make them excellent swimmers, which means they’ll love a trip to the beach. They are especially good around children and other animals due to their gentle, friendly temperament, making them excellent family dogs.

Labradors certainly enjoy their food (who doesn’t?), so it’s easy for them to gain weight. It’s important to keep them on a strict diet to ensure they’re healthy enough for the next adventure!

German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is a medium to large-sized working dog, infamous for assisting the police and military. On the list of most popular dogs, it consistently ranks in the top 10 because of its intelligence, courage, and lasting companionship.

Considered one of the smartest breeds, Shepherds can learn new tasks quickly and effortlessly. Protective instincts are strong, and they’re known for fearlessly protecting their owners.

German Shepherds aren’t meant for a sedentary lifestyle — they need to move. (A lot.) Their energy is seemingly boundless and requires almost constant activity. They’re the perfect breed for long runs, bike rides, hikes, or even climbing.

A strong, muscular physique, high-level intelligence, and intense loyalty make the German Shepherd an optimal outdoor sidekick.

Portuguese Water Dog

Looking for a furry friend to take on your next boating trip? The Portuguese Water Dog is ready to go!

These medium-sized dogs prefer to stay close to their owners, so there’s less worrying about them wandering off during a water excursion. In the past, they were used to help fishers herd fish into nets and retrieve broken tackle.

Whether you choose one with a wavy or curly coat, there’s one thing they both have in common — their love of water. Staying true to their name, Portuguese Water Dogs are always up for a swim, boat ride, or sailing trip.

They also have an incredibly high energy level, so water adventures aren’t the only ones they’re suited for — walks, runs, or hikes (especially near a lake or river) are also fitting. They are affectionate, intelligent, and happiest when participating in lots of different outdoor activities.

Outdoor Dog Breeds Are Always Ready for Adventure

The great outdoors are even greater with a companion by your side! Gone are the days of hitting the trail or setting up camp on your own — the right dog is ready to take on the world with you.

There’s a variety of outdoor dog breeds that crave adventure, and all you have to do is find one! Check out Petland to see if the perfect outdoor dog is waiting for you.
